3228 N. Clark Street Chicago, IL 60657 map it! Perhaps one of Chicago’s most famous stores, the Alley is a rock’n’roll institution that recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Owner Mark Thomas became acquainted with the store at its original location in suburban Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall. After convincing the original owner to make him partner, Thomas opened up his own Alley store on Broadway and Surf in 1975. In 1987, the store was relocated to its current site, off of an actual cobblestone alley at 858 W. Belmont, one half block west of Clark Street. Business boomed, and within a short amount of time, the Woodfield Mall’s branch closed and Mark Thomas became sole owner of The Alley. The Alley stocks 6,000-8,000 active items, including the latest rock n’ roll T-shirts, motorcycle jackets, shoes, posters, and jewelry, as well as a myriad of other products geared to youthful and “alternative” shoppers. |  |
